Is George R.R. Martin’s epic ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ an Alternate History story?
It’s not an alternative history that I know of. I read the first book in the series “A Game of Thrones” and was impressed. Unfortunately, I haven’t had time to read the rest of the series.
From what I recall, the northern border issue with the guards that were forced to live in a near endless winter, it doesn’t have any bearing on any history that I know of. You can make similar arguments about “alternative histories” for many fantasy works, which tend to borrow elements from history & folklore to evoke a sense of belonging & provided a grounded point of reference upon which to drape the rest of their fantastical tales.
