How do I cope with my injury?

I recently had a major injury playing basketball (street, not on a team) and I’ve spent my whole life playing sports, I have played hockey since I was 3 years old. and since then I’ve been constantly playing sports (football, soccer, lacrosse, hockey) and now, I dislocated my knee and tore my ACL and need surgery. I’ve done almost the same thing once before, but I tore my MCL and it healed itself and with physical therapy I was back in a few months. but now it will be years, if I will ever play anything again. at first I didnt mind, it was kind of like, a break from sports (thats how I saw it at least). but now, it just makes me depressed. I cant do the simplest of athletc things. no running, jogging, anything. I tried running a couple times, and the pain is just unbarable. and it kills me, I’ve always been playing sports, or skating, or doing something. I just dont know how to cope with this. has anybody else ever been through this? when I think of it, I just get depressed. im never going to be the same again. I have been playing hockey for 13 years straight. and now I may never play again. I loved playing sports, and if I ever do play them again, I know I will never be the same. does anybody know how to cope with such an injury?

Answer #1

Your orthopedic surgon will know a lot more about your prognosis than anyone else.

Is swimming an option? To me that seems like the least stressful sport on the joints.

Answer #2

refrain from playing such sports anymore because your injury is too vulnerable now. you need to divert to other sports that doesn’t require a extreme running etc. yes, swimming can be an option or maybe shooting or archery can do…
