Help me Lifting weights

Ok so I’ve been working out for quite a while on tone so I decided to start building. I was wondering do you just do like 3 sets of three on your maximum lifting capacity to gain muscle?

dude said he wants to gain muscle, not tone up mike. don’t take weight lifting advice from about.com and yes lifting heavy for fewer reps is how you build muscle

No, absolutely not. Even if you’re trying to gain muscle mass and not just tone, lifting that much weight is going to lead to serious injury. Here’s a helpful guide for beginners from about.com:

  • Choose a weight you can only lift 16 times. You don’t need to go to complete failure, but make sure you’re challenging your body.
  • Begin with 1 set of each exercise, slowly working your way up to 2-3 sets (I.e., adding a set each week)
  • When you’ve added sets and have a solid foundation (after 6-8 weeks), add more weight so that you can ONLY do 8-12 reps.
  • Continue to progress by adding a rep each week until you reach the max reps (no more than 16), increase your weight and drop your reps back down to 8-12.

They also have a nice comprehensive article about everything you need to know about getting started in weight training here: http://exercise.about.com/cs/exerciseworkouts/a/weight101.htm

I don’t know how old x_dead_x is but one thing I’d add is that teenagers should not lift heavy. Their growth plates and joints are still weak at that age. They are better off using moderate weights and more reps; they won’t have the same muscle gains but they also will not hurt themselves.

For lifters who are through growing lfiting heavy is the way to build maximum muscle.

I’d add that I’ve got the best results from a program called HIT or High Intensity Training. With this system you do a single set of heavy weights all out. It is best to have a spotter to make the last rep or two forced. This has worked better for me than any other approach.
