Extreme shyness, how to over come it in time for high school?

I’m a very shy person. I use to be popular and outgoing in the lower grades, but then I started getting bullied and my self esteem just went kaboom. I was just never the same. I look at the ground when I walk the halls, and avoid everyone elses eyes in my middle school. If the teacher calls on me in class I almost cry and choke on my words! I know the answer but with all those people all staring at me I feel so afriad and small. I only have 1 close and best friend, and she’s not even going to my high school next year. I’m going to be all alone and so scared when I start high school next year and I just want to be accepted and learn how to make friends again! My stomach gets all knotted up just thinking about it and I’m so lonely and depressed all the time. Anyone else in a situation like this or can suggest something helpful to get over extreme shyness?

You sound like me. I was outgoing until about 3rd/4th grade when I started getting bullied and then started retreating. I began to emerge again at around age 17.

Here’s how to overcome shyness, like any fear. You have to face it. Force yourself into uncomfortable situations, and deal with the ridicule with determination rather than defeat. Talk to the girl that sits next to you. Say “hi” to the jocks as you pass them in the hall. Ask the guy sitting next to at lunch how his weekend was.

I had my share of whispers and laughs as I came out of the closet, but by my senior year, everyone else had forgotten all that, and I mingled just as easily with the ‘nerds’ as with the football players. It was a fantastic feeling of empowerment to have overcome that and end up accepted by both groups.

This consumate introvert did it, and so can you.
