Do cotton shirts really shrink in the washing machine?

I’ve heard they do but I’m not sure..

Yes, they do. The fibers is what shrinks.

A little, but they shrink more so in the dryer, to reduce shrinking a ton wash in cold water and set the dryer to “gentle” or hang dry.

I think they do most of the shrinking in the dyer. Wash them on cold and then hang them to dry. That should work for you.
