I'm Chinese haha, my parents call "chow mein" "fried rice" "sweet n sour pork" white-chinese food. There is such a larger variety of Chinese food that most non-asians don't try, mostly because they don't know what-or how to order. My parents order many dishes, from spareribs with garlic, ginger and green onion in a sizzling pot to pork neck meat with xo sauce to deep fried fish with deep fried tofu with some sauce and ginger and onion. It's hard to name just a few.
After several (very bad) experiences with Chinese take-away's--mainly due to very rude staff--I decided I would never again patronise Chinese resturants. The last time I visited a Chinese restaurant was when I was taken to one in mid-2004 in Beijing. It was much the same as Chinese restaurants everywhere else.
Sweet and sour chicken with noodles, omfg Oh and this Chinese place across the street makes amazing lemon chicken.
Stir fry, either sweet and sour or teriyaki. Shrimp fried rice. Spring rolls and fortune cookies :-)
Sizzling rice soup, Szechuan chicken and or deep fried shrimp, shrimp chow mein, and fried rice.
Fukien fried rice just cuz I like the way it's spelled lol it doesn't taste bad either.
I had some of that when I was in Phuket http://funadvice.com/r/16bqg7eitm0
