Do cats especially like scratching and playing with leather?

I heard this somewhere, and I am a little concerned as I was going to get something that is leather for someone.

No but if leather crosses them they will. Cats generally scratch everything. My advise is to buy or make something especially for the Cat and maybe it might stick to only that.

Cats scratch every couch, but a leather couch will be ruined immediately. My cat totally ignores any leather bags and shoes.

once you notice the cat does it and you stop it, they will learn it and will not likely do it again. Instead they will find something else.

Cats scratch at things like furniture and scratching posts because its a strong solid object covered with a nice scratchable material. This scratching helps them stretch and sharpen their claws. A post wrapped with a good leather or suede would probably become the go-to place for them.
