Cat Labor

My cat is having kittens as we speak. She went into labor at about 7:00 P.M Eastern time yesterday. She had one kitten. Than at four or so this afternoon she had another. I believe there are as many as three more, but if her labor keeps on like this it could be days. I wanted to call the vet this evening but the office is closed. She isn’t eating anything now, but she is drinking milk. Will she be okay?

my sisters cat has had two lots of babies and has eaten through both of them so I spose it depends on the cat. we sat there and laughed she was gutsing it down between babies. maybe she doesnt want to have the babies where she is. have you tried to move her basket to where you are? if she wants you there then maybe she will be happier. I hate to say this but if the other kittens come too late they might have something wrong with them and not survive so prepare yourself for that. my cat once had a babie 10 hours after all the other ones and we were ready to take her to vets and she just poped it out. it survived !

Well, an animal in labor doesn’t want any food…Is this her first litter? I’d give her til morning, if that’s the case…then I’d haul her AND her babies into the vets.

Still at two- Vet said it may take a little longer - gave her a shot - not sure what it was - husband doesn’t remember. Two more babies to go though. She should be done by morning according to the vet

My dogs don’t eat but they will drink milk, it brings on their contractions, It may do the same thing for cats but because it normally will give the loose stool, I wouldn;t use it much,

Answer #5

Well, she is under the basement stairs (ironically in the same spot her sister had kittens over the summer) but once every hour or so she comes into my office and howles at me until I pet her. I tried staying with her for a little while but then she wont stay in the box with the two kittens who are already born. As for the milk, my sister said to try it if nothing else worked.

Answer #6

iF SHE IS NERVOUS ABOUT BEING WATCHED IT MAY HINDER HER PROGRESS. Try leaving her in a qiet spot for a couple of hours and see how she goes. They do this all the time in the wild and know what to do. Its usually humans that cause the interferance with the birthing by being too inquisitive. I have to say it is cool to watch but yeh try giving her some space.

Answer #7

Oh milk will help her contrations but I wouldn’t let her have it. Does she drink milk often?

Leave her alone if she is doing ok. Most animals, no matter how close to you they are want to have their babies alone. So if you are watching her this may be delaying the delivery.

Just check on her every now and then and make sure she is clean, kittens are doing ok and are clean and then leave her alone.

No milk
