why won't my itunes recognises that my ipod touch is connected to the computer?

My ipods locked and now it won't let me connect to itunes and I can't go in and unlock the passcode because it won't come of...

When i plug it in the computer makes the connected noise & the ipod lights up & thats it. my friend gave me it for christmas....
