Will your parents let you get a tattoo?

Have your parents let you get a tattoo? If so, how did you ask for it? Or, have your parents said absolutely not? What do you plan on doing?

Hi,

My parents said no. So I waited until I was 18. I wanted to respect them and their rules…so at 18 I got my first tattoo on my ankle. Now I have 4 and want more :) It’s ironic because my Mom ended up getting one not too long ago…haha.

I got my first tattoo when I was 16. I had to go around my father, because he said “no” no matter how much I tried to reason with him. I went to my mother (they’re divorced) and she was a little more lenient than my father and she let me get it. I don’t think it matters so much what you say to your parents or how you ask them. It’s more of how they view that kind of thing (body modifications) because my father tends to be more traditional and against it whereas my mother has always been a rebel and stuff like that.

I think anyone in that situation should just hold off, because when you’re 15, 16, 17 you really need to be able to think of the future and what the image you want to have tattooed will keep you from doing or how it will change as your body changes. When you’re really young you more than likely want to be tattooed just for the sake of having it done (but that’s not always the case though). It’s best to just wait until you can go out and get a tattoo when you’re old enough; you have a few years to decide if you still want that image.

Yes my mom did let me get a tattoo for my 16th birthday. I had told her a couple of months before that I wanted one, and asked her if I could get one for my 16th birthday. My mom went with me and everything, and we got one together. Be careful getting a tattoo young, I would say to think long and hard about what you are going to get,a and get something with meaning, and something that you wont regret later on. I got a butterfly, because a butterfly represents change, rebirth, and metamorphasis. And change is exactly what I’m going through =] Good Luck!

My parents have never been a fan of tattoos, so I had to wait until I was eighteen. I did come SO close to getting one, but then I realized it was a personal statement I wanted to make, then maybe I should just get a bumper sticker. After I could afford to buy my own car, that is.

I’m completely over tattoos now. All I can say is: I’m glad I don’t have any proof to let every stranger know that I was once another tasteless conforming idiot.

Dear octobersun, The smartest thing I did was wait until I was in my 30s to get my first tattoo…I understand you don’t want to wait that long but when I see the poor choices that are being made…I was smart. In Canada you cannot get a tattoo until you are 18 and even then some will not take you till you are 21. If you are under 18 you would have to have your parent with you…no note as it is not supposed to be accepted. We had several tattoo parlors close down due to the spread of HEP…so you need to do your homework before getting a tattoo. Sue…good luck
