Why won't my dog eat after she gave birth?

My dog gave birth to 9 puppies on Thursday(New Year’s Eve). One of them died the next morning. The past couple of days she has hardly eaten anything. I have tried to give her soft and hard food but she doesn’t want either. She has gotten really skinny and weak. What can I do to make her eat. I am hesitant to give her any types of meat because she was extremely sick recently(the past five months or so) and the doctor said it was pancreatitis and it was caused from having too much fat in her diet.

Your dog is probably quite sad, even if some people believe that it may not be the case. I really think that your best bet is to have your vet have a quick look and make sure there isn’t anything else wrong with her as well, especially given her history of having been sick before. Just make sure she is only heart sick.

I wouldnt hesitate in taking her to the vets for a checkup. If there’s nothing medicaly wrong, the vet van give her an appetite boost via medication. Is she feeding the puppies adequately? She may have an infection from a retained piece of placenta or similar - this can be treated by a course of antibiotics, which should be started asap for her and her puppies sake. Good luck .. and enjoy the little ones ~ they grow so fast!
