Should I mate my dog?

You know me. Im about to get a new puppy, and when I do I was wondering when she is about 3 years old if I should mate her or not. I haven’t bred dogs in a while, but I have before. And I’ll have the help of my parents. My parents are experienced, also. But, since I haven’t in a long time I thought it’de be pretty neat if I did. My parents don’t care. So, should I?

Answer #1

I don’t think that you should. Like ichi said there are enough unwanted dogs out there. Rather get your dog fixed.

Answer #2

I agree with Ichibanarky (as always, shes a smart cookie) I feel its best to get your dogs spayed/neutered. There is 100’s of thousands of dogs sitting in shelters looking for a home. A dog should be a pet not your little breeding money maker.

Answer #3

I really wish you wouldn’t.

There are so many dogs out there in desperate need of a home, and you’re adding to the problem by allowing your dog to breed.

Answer #4

Then you’re getting your new pup from the top working/show lines in the country?? Do the parents have working titles? Herding titles? Show titles? Have you seen the pedigrees? Have this pups parents, grandparents and great grandparents been OFA’d for elbow and hip problems? Eyes checked (since PRA runs in BC’s as well as all other collie breeds)?

If your new pup doesn’t have all this in it’s background, then you won’t be bettering the breed, you’ll simply be producing mediocre pups.

Ok, thanks Phrannie. All I was doing is trying to better the breed, I didn’t plan on selling them. So, no im not just trying to get money. Even if I did sell the pups which I most likely won’t, I would make the people sign a contract saying they will not give away the dog, and if they decide it’s too much for them I could take the dog back. I’ve had a BC before. A long time ago though.

Answer #6

No,how many homeless dogs are shot, burnt, poisoned and even tortured and left to die on the streets.Adoption centers are so full of them that they have to kill the ones that no one wants to adopt, plus a dog that is constantly pregnant has complications and can even kill it.If you desexe her she will have no chance of getting mamell cancer and other deadly diseases but she may still keep the desire to mate.

Answer #7

I don’t know I haven’t been to a breeder yet, but I will definently make sure my pup has all of those. (:

Answer #8

yes I agree I have just bred my female rotti and yes I no what ya all are thinking but I have braught my dog up in a loving and secure home ans she is verry loving to everyone she has been to groops to put people at ease about this breed and that is why I mated her to try better the breed you should only mate a dog if that is what you intend on doing

Answer #9

No…

Unless your motivation is to better the breed, then there is no sense in bringing more pups into a world who doesn’t want or need them.

There are thousands of Border Collies in rescues…look it up on the internet…they are everywhere in the shelters. People get them without any thought to how much exercise, and stimulation they need…only to find that they’ve taken on a dog who’s basically smarter than they are.

Down the road, after you’ve gotten to know this breed, know what to expect, have studied the genetics, the breed standards etc…and still feel like you want to breed BC’s, then do it. You can go out and buy the best BC female you can find…and breed to the best stud out there. But for now…enjoy your pet, get to know your breed…and all that it takes to keep a BC a happy balanced dog.
