What is the difference between Catholic and Christian?

I’m always wondering what is the difference between catholic and christianity. I know that catholic churches have a priest and Christians have pastors. My sience teacher says that they are separated by politics. I need an answer pwease ^^

Answer #1

The difference isn’t between Catholic and Christian, it is between Catholic and protestant. They are all Christian. In the 1600s, I believe, Martin Luther posted his complaints against the Catholic church on the church door (the bulletin board of that day) and caused a splitting of the Catholic religion. The reformation caused there to be a Catholic religion and protestant religions. There are two Catholic religions and many protestant religions. Besides the difference in pomp and ceremony, the main difference is that the Catholics have more books in their Bible than the traditional 66 in the protestant Bible.

Answer #2

We all share the same beliefs that Christ is the savior.

It is a common misunderstanding that Catholics and Christians have the same beliefs. They don’t. Catholicism teaches a lot of things that is not Biblical. The Jesus that we see in the Bible has offered a perfect sacrifice and is our high priest. But in Catholicism the sacrifice that Jesus offered is not sufficient therefore they require a priest who offers sacrifice on a daily basis. That is going opposite to the Bible! Also according to the Bible salvation is by faith and not by works. But Catholicism teaches the opposite as it teaches that the sacraments are necessary. Thus at the very base there is a vast difference between the two beliefs.

Granted Catholicism is a more strict way to live your life according the law. Other religions substitute old teachings and try and adopt them to the current living. Catholics do no such thing.

On the contrary it is Catholicism that makes constant effort adjust itself to the world. The laws have been diluted in the Church and many laws are not followed. I would suggest to all Catholics to so a study of the Bible and also so a study on the teachings of the Church.

Regarding the blessed virgin Mary. Catholics believe she is withought sin, that is why she was chosen to be the mother of Christ.

Many catholics believe the hearsays such as this taught to them by the Church. If we are Christians why do we believe something that is not in the word of God? It does not say in the Bible that Mary was without sin. Next it does not say that Mary was ever virgin. In fact the other sons of Mary are mentioned by name in the Bible. Further it says in the Bible that no one is without sin. But the Church insists on calling Mary “ever virgin” and that claim that she was without sin.

St.Paul refers to many Catholic beliefs now in his letters including the belief of purgatory, mortal sins and much more.

No fau. The Paul never talks about purgatory. Also I am not aware of any verse in the Bible that Mortal sin. If you know of any verse please let me know.

Do we need to be Catholic ? No. We all face judgement, Christians, Catholics, Muslims. No-one knows for sure what happens,

Catholicism is a religion that has a lot of pagan practices mixed in. Many of those practices have been condemned by God in the old testament. God will defiantly not be pleased with us to be in a religion like that. I request every catholic to make a comparative study on the teachings of Church and the Bible.

May God Bless those who study

Answer #3

She was most likely born different withought the stain of sin adopted from Adam .. and is why gabriel said mary, …full of grace withought sin. Blessed.

I disagree. Christians are those who follow Jesus and the Word of God the Bible. A Christian will does not believe that Mary was without sin. The only person who had no sin was Jesus Christ.

They are not that different, very very slight. Dont confuse Catholics and Christians with protestants.

Brother according to the Bible a Christian is one who follows Jesus Christ. A collective group is called a denomination. But a Christian refers to an individual. What our denomination is not of essence but are we Christians is what we need to ask ourselves.

The truth that Christians follow is called Christianity.

Protestants are people who followed Martin Luther who protested against Catholicism.

But Catholicism is a religion by itself and is much different from Christianity. Catholicism is filled with pagan practices that are not found in the Bible. Some very key concepts are changed in Catholicism.

Great answer eternal life…

Jesus came to establish Christianity, and it was a choice, that one made, thru the power of the Holy Spirit, that is still today, what Christianity is about… .freedom…in Christ.

religion, to me, is man made rules and regulations, compared to faith.

Jesus established Christianity on faith.

Not rules and regulations.

Not by force.

Constintine…demanded… by force … that all in the empire worship Christ.

This is wrong.

This is not what Jesus came to do.

Jesus accepts us by faith, in the finished work of Calvary, not on our own merits.

We do not get good enough to come to Christ, we come as we are.

We are not ever held in the Kingdom by force, by rules, by regulations, etc. we are held… by faith.

we enter by faith, we stay by faith, and we finish the race… all by faith.

There is a big difference.

Answer #5

the above to users are correct.

catholicism is just another denomination of christianity.

Answer #6

Catholicism is just a branch of Christianity, there are many different branches (Protestant, Methodist, Mormon, etc.), but they follow the practices and teachings of Jesus.

Answer #7

Catholicism is just a branch of Christianity. There’s nothing different about them.

Like pizza is a type of italian food.

You’re probably thinking that Baptists have pastors and Catholics have priests.

Answer #8

There is a misunderstanding there. Christianity existed before Catholicism was formed. There were Christians around before and after Catholicism was formed. Catholicism grew in power and had tried to make Christians Catholics by force. They tried many things to destroy Christians. Christians were tortured and they even tried to destroy the Bible by burning all available copies and preventing further copies from being printed. Bible however did survive by the grace of God. Martin Luther was a Christian who protested against this behavior of the Catholic Church. Therefore the Catholic Church called him and his followers Protestants.

Answer #9

Catholicism is said to be another branch of Christianity. The followers of Christ were called Christians at first. A church just referred to a group of Christians. The denominations came later on. When the Roman emperor Consentine became a Christian he made Christianity a sate religion and to make it more acceptable to the Romans he added pagan practices to it and corrupted it. Thus what we see today as Catholicism has very little resemblance to Christianity.

Answer #10

Well I learned in youth group that the major difference is Catholics have a Pope while Christians don’t, but technically a Catholic is Christian, but a Christian is not neccessary a Catholic, because Catholicism is a type of Christianity if that makes sense. But basically Both believe in God, but has differences such as interpretations of the Bible and strictness differences

Answer #11

Catholicism grew in power and had tried to make Christians Catholics by force. They tried many things to destroy Christians.

It wasn’t just Christians, it was everyone who wasn’t Catholic.

Answer #16

why do catholics CLAIM to POWER to judge…PEOPLES ~souls / AFTER LIFE… TO PUT them in…DAMNATION in FLAMES , TORTURE suffering ..IN Romes purgatory ?

why do catholics CLAIM to POWER to judge…PEOPLES ~souls / AFTER LIFE… TO PUT them in HEAVEN…WHERE THEY PRAY TO THEM before RESURECTION jugdment DAY ?

The bible is CLEAR…THE DEAD saints …DEAD in CHRIST…will ARIZE in the RESURECTION…WHERE IS PURGATORY ?

ROME IS …THE JUDGE of the DEAD..or in charge of ones SOUL / judgment…. after they die…?…

WHY IS th that …CATHOLICS CANT FIND their CHURCH in the BIBLE ANYWHERE,,,why do they invent. these man made traditions ..

that are agINSt tHE BIBLE…completly

then THEY HAVE NO ANSWERS,,, from the bible

The bible tells US WHAT HAPPENS TO THE DEAD. WHERE THE DEAD ARE…AND WHAT ROLE THE DEAD HAVE IN THIS LIFE.

But catholic do not beleive the bible…

1Co 15:51 …Behold, I show you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,

acording to GOds word…WE DIE AND THEN WE SLEEP IN DEATH~~ UNTIL JUDGEMENT. -

-IN THE SECOND COMING -~~THE DEAD WILL RISE FIRST // We shall not all sleep THE LIVING WILL BE CAUGHT UP TO MEET THEM IN THE AIR

Mat 9:24 …My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live JESUS said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not DEAD,

but sleepeth.//… And they laughed him to scorn.

MT 22:31 But as touching the resurrection of the DEAD, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying,

MT 22:32 I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the DEAD, but of the living.

He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err

1CO 15:20 But now is Christ risen from the DEAD, and become the firstfruits of them that slept

1CO 15:52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the DEAD shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

Purgatory~ IS NOT ONLY / NOT IN THE BIBLE,,,…BUT CONDEMNED BY THE BIBLE

1TH 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the DEAD in Christ shall rise first:

I Thessalonians 5:9 obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.

I Thessalonians 4:14. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

  1. …we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

Ephesians 5 :14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.

1CO 15:51 Behold, I show you a mystery; We shall not all SLEEP, but we shall all be changed,

52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised

DA 12:1 At that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.

And many of them that SLEEP in the dust of the earth shall awake,

JOB 14:12 So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their SLEEP.

God teaches us that when we die we ‘sleep’ and ‘know nothing’.

2SA 7:12 And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou [DAVID] shalt SLEEP with thy fathers

DE 31:16 And the LORD said unto Moses, Behold, thou shalt SLEEP with thy fathers; and this people will rise up

1CO 15:20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that SLEPT.

MT 27:52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which SLEPT arose,

2CH 33:20 So Manasseh SLEPT with his fathers, and they buried him in his own house:

2CH 32:33 And Hezekiah SLEPT with his fathers, and they buried him in the chiefest of the sepulchres of the sons of David:

2CH 28:27 And Ahaz SLEPT with his fathers, and they buried him in the city, Jerusalem

2CH 27:9 And Jotham SLEPT with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David

2CH 26:23 So Uzziah SLEPT with his fathers, and they buried him with his fathers

2CH 21:1 Now Jehoshaphat SLEPT with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers

so sad that catholics must lie about all that the bible says… … If anyone disagrees with the bible…pls…eXplain

catholisme is a part of christianity along orthodoxes(from north europe to north asia),the anglicans(from England who do not follow the pope) and protestants (who are in the Americas,UK…) cathlics have very strict beliefs like:women are inferior to men,you mustn’t eat meat on a friday so eat fish instead… protestants believe every one is equal.

Answer #19

I was raised Catholic and became a Christian by choice when I was 25. I can tell you exactly what the difference is. Catholicism is a religeon. There are thousands of religeons in the world. The difference between all religeons and legitimate authentic Christianity is that all religeons have some form of a plan or activities that are designed to have you somehow “earn” your way to good standing with God and make it to heaven or utopia or whatever their version is called. But real christianity is different, it is not based on religeon, it is based on a personal relationship with God through Jesus. The only people Jesus ever got mad at were religeous people because they claim to represent him when they really don’t. And they heap burdens on people that God never intended for them to carry. He came to take our burdens off of us not put more on us. It is impossible to be good enough or pray enough times or live the right lifestyle or whatever and gain good standing with God. If we could somehow pay for our own sins then Jesus would have died for no reason. Its actually denying jesus to try to earn your way to heaven. This isnt my idea, its what the bible clearly says. I was forced to go to a Catholic church until the age of thirteen until I completely refused. I always sensed there was something wrong there. It was such a boring oppressive environment for me and the only message I really got about Jesus there was that it was my fault he was crucified and that if I didn’t follow a list of rules I was going to hell. Not exactly uplifting and pretty scary for a child. It doesn’t take a genius to reject that message. The truth is that, that is the polar opposite of the truth and what the bible actually says. The word Gospel literally means “good news.” The good news is that Christ has already paid the penalty for all of our sins and salvation is the FREE gift of God. By simply believing he died for us and confessing it we receive eternal life as a gift. The Catholic Church through the years has adopted several beliefs and practices that are totally against the word of God and dont have anything to do with Jesus. Here are just a few: a) The bible clearly states that we should call no one father but God for we have one father, in heaven. Catholics regularly refer to their priests as father. b) the bible makes it clear that Mary was a human being and not a god. God even designed a womans body so that her bodys blood never comes into contact with her babies because Jesus had sinless blood and it could not be mixed with Mary’s because he had to have perfect blood to be an adequate sacrifice for us. In Catholicism Mary is put on a pedestal and called the mother of God. God has no mother. Scripture says he looked all around heaven and everywhere and could find no one like or equal to him. They (catholics) also pray to Mary ,which goes completely against scripture where God says you have one mediator with God and that is Jesus. We are to pray only in his name. Praying to people is wrong and sinful but it is common practice in the Catholic church including praying to what they call saints, but in the word God calls all of us who are christians saints. We are all equal and you definetely should not pray to other people. c) The Catholic church celebrates and has incorporated into their traditions calling resurrection Sunday the day we are to celebrate Jesus rising from the dead , they call it Easter which is a form of the pagan God Ishtar which has to do with fertility/sex etc. thats what eggs and bunnies represent - it has nothing to do with jesus and is just one example of pagan practices within the Catholic church. These are just a few examples and my answer is already pretty long, but my point is that just because an organization claims to be christian doesn’t mean that they really believe and obey the bible and are really christians following Jesus. When I first read the bible at age 25 for myself I was blown away with what it actually said. It was the opposite of what I had been taught (nobody ever gave me a bible to read for myself the whole 13 years I went thereand that is common). The thing people are talking about, about protestants is when the catholic church had the bible only in latin and didnt allow normal people to have the bible in their language. The Catholic churches stance was that common man couldnt or shouldnt read the bible and interpret for themselves . In keeping the bible from the people it was easy to maintain control over them by telling them they needed a priest to tell them what it said . This is another thing that totally goes against scripture . God commands us to read the word ourselves and test what people say against the word itself so that we cant be fooled. That Luther guy found out what the bible really said just like I did and demanded that the catholic church make the word available and acknowledge that salvation is through grace (unmerited favor) by faith and not by works. He basically protested, thus the name and the label given. Basically Catholics believe they are the one true church of Jesus, and growing up my mom would tell me that Catholics teach that if you are not Catholic you are not a real christian and that Jesus started their church with Peter and that he was the head of the Catholic church . Which is not true. Jesus founded HIS church on the revelation of who He is not on a human man named Peter. Any way I hope this answer shines some light I spent a lot of time growing up not knowing any of this stuff and confused. The devils job is to hide the truth from everyone and hes very good at it . Millions of americans go to church and call themselves christians but they have only heard what I will call a typical american version of the gospel which isn’t accurate. I don’t have any animosity agaimst any Catholic people and I even believe that there are some true Christians in the Catholic church although I would think that at some point if they truly have the holy spirit in them that he would reveal the truth of what is really going on there. I am sure there are people that go there trying to find God that go into a Catholic church or are raised ina Catholic family and its dangerous because they teach pergatory there. Pergatory is not anywhere in the bible it doesnt exist and its a very dangerous teaching because it makes people believe that after they die there will be a time where they can repent and atone for themselves and that is not true it is appointed to every man once to die and then the judgement. You have to make a decision in this life before you die wether you are for Jesus or against him, wether you belong to him or the devil. I wouldn’t want to die without him in my heart and I wouldn’t wish that fate on anyone, but we all have to decide for ourselves. God loves us enough to give us a free will and freedom and choice . Obviously I could go on about all this for along time . Have a great day and be blessed !
