What is an assertion?

I want to know what an assertion is, like my teacher said we have to give an assertion, and two reasons with examples and evidence. could you give me an example?

Are you sure you were asked for an “assertion”, not an “assertation”?

An assertion is a positive declaration (requires no proof - something that is known): “There are fish in the ocean”

An assertation is a statement of opinion: “I think ghosts exist”
