What do we do for 3 yr old when mommy goes to jail for a month?

Our daughter (21) and grandaughter (3) live with us. Our daughter is going to serve a 25 day sentence, and we must keep a “so-far” well adjusted three year old for the duration. How do we explain it and get our grandaughter through it all with the fewest problems?

Answer #1

She’s freaking 3 years old. Don’t tell her that mommy did something bad, she’s 3. Whatever you do don’t do that.

Tell her that mommy has an important job and has to go there for a while. She’s 3.

Whatever you do don’t tell her that mommy did something bad. By the time mommy gets back home in about 10 minutes she would have forgotten all about her being gone.

Answer #2

Well just tell the young girl that her mommy has to go away for a bit but she will be back and now she can visit with grandma and grandpa for now. Try not to remind her or talk about it when she is around. Yours truly, Demika Ray

Answer #3

Honey, mommy did something bad and made a mistake so knwo she has to go to time out for a while so she can fix her mistake she’ll be home soon

Answer #4

I wouldn’t say she is in prison or jail… they can be pretty scary words for a little person…

Answer #5

you have to say something like mommy is on a trip or if she is mature say ommy has to go to time out!thats what my grandma told me!

Answer #6

Well, I guess opinions on this will vary. I do, however, think that you should be as honest with her as possible, but also as discreet as possible. I’d let her know that her mom made a bad mistake (but maybe DON’T explain it in detail what she did or where she is?) and that she has to go away for a while due to it.

While she’s away, just try to keep your granddaughter as busy as possible to keep her mind elsewhere. It may be tough, but you can definitely get through it.

Take care.
