What can I put in my 5 gallon beta tank to eat the algea?

my daughter has a 5 gallon beta tank and the algea is getting out of control! I put two snails in there but they are not eating enough and are not getting the algea off the fake plants and decor, I know algea eaters/sucker fish need filters but betas dont like them so what else can I put in there?

Answer #1

You can put a Plecostomus in the tank to eat the algae. If it is too far gone, scrape the glass with a razor and the Plecostomus will take it from there. The Beta will not bother this fish.

Answer #2

Just get a sponge or something and clean it with if you don’t want to have to put a bubbler in. A pleco would be ideal (that is what I have in both of my tanks and they are great) but if you don’t want to put a bubbler in, they have a few different things at the pet stores that you can get so you don’t even have to stick your hand in the bowl if you don’t want to so you can clean the bowl – basically a sponge on a stick.

I got the whole set up at the pet store as a kit, I dont want to waist my money now, lol , if I did do that what can I put in there that doesnt need a filter or bubbles, thanks so much for helpin

Answer #4

E 5 gallon tank is pretty big for just one beta. That just need a small space. That actually prefer it. It makes them feel safe. Try getting it just a small fish bowl. Hope I helped!

Answer #5

Answer #6

go to a pe store and ask somebody there or look online. good luck.

Answer #7

your tank is way to big they like small very small tanks like a wine glass size thats why its so dirty

Answer #8

as for the idiots who say bettas need small places like the cups they are temporarily stored in in pet stores, never speak again. you are, in essence, oxygen thieves when it comes to fish. in the wild their territories span spaces over a meter, not a freaking wine glass. normally bettas who live in those temporary cups in the pet stores dont make it past a month.

Fau: keep the snails, get a pleco. It will eat the algae alongside the snails, and add a little more life to the aquarium than the snails are.

Answer #9

as for the people who think bettas can live in small spaces, never speak again. you are, essentially all oxygen thieves when it comes to fish. This is the crap that pet stores say to sell the fish easier, aka “You dont need a pump, filter, heater..” then after the fish dies the customer comes right back to buy another. Bettas in the wild span over 1 meter in territories, not a freaking wine glass like the temporary cups they are kept in. The cups in the pet stores are for temporary storage, and most bettas if not sold die from the cups after a month.

Fau: buy a cory or a pleco and be done with it. They will add a bit more life than the snails do and clean alongside them.
