It depends on what you consider good. No vegan cheese melts like real cheese. Casein is a milk protein that gives cheese its melty gooey goodness. Many soy cheeses cheat and use casein as an ingredient so they aren’t vegan but they also melt more like real cheese..

At one point my local Whole Foods had a really good product that was cheese flavored tofu and it was vegan. It didn’t melt like cheese but it was really good in a sandwich. Unfortunately they never carried it again and thinking that I’d just get more next time at WF I didn’t save the wrapper or memorize the brand.

Personally I’m a lacto-ovo vegetarian though for the last 5 years I’ve been trying to eat closer to a vegan diet. I still have soy cheese with casein and other non-vegan vegetarian foods from time to time.

Pepper Jack is the uber-cheese. drools

Look, I know you want to be ‘vegan’ but, you can only lie to your stomach about so many things. Just eat real cheese. I’m sure the cows won’t mind.

The best vegan cheese I’ve come across is the Rice Cheese made mbGalaxy Nutritional Foods. While a little chalky, it has the best flavor when compare to real dairy cheese.

Someone told me this is excellent. I’ve never tried it myself, but this information comes from the fussiest eater on the face of the earth. :-)

Actually, most dairy cows have a pretty rough life. Factory dairy farms only keep one bull for every 10 cows so guess what happens to the other 9 bulls? If someone is a vegetarian out of concern for animals it is hard to justify factory dairy farms.

I avoid dairy because in my estimation it is the most unhealthy thing we eat. When I became a lacto-ovo vegetarian in Spring of ‘80 I mostly substituted cheese for meat. I got cheese tacos instead of beef etc. Now I’m convinced that from a health point of view I would have been better off continuing to eat meat and quitting dairy.

I love Follow your Heart’s Vegan Gourmet cheese!! While a little pricey to buy online, I think it’s worth it. (:

I can’t eat this stuff without melting it, but it melts rather well. Rice Cheese is much more like dairy cheese, but I believe I had to stop eating it because it had animal products. There’s also a nasty little brand by the same people who make Veggie Slices (available at most Wal Marts, etc.) that was called Vegan Slices, don’t try these for any amount of money.
