Is it unhealthy/unproductive to exercise right before going to bed?

Answer #1

Super good question. To be honest, this is definately an “it depends.”

If your overweight and you workout to hit the sack, your lactic acid responds so much faster and you wake up as if you ran the whole day.

If you drink a bunch of water, it evens it out.

If your skinny or a regular activity kinda person, you should make sure you stretch and warm down(this is advised to everyone).

Answer #2

not sure i do it almost every day to help me sleep. i don’t think its unhealthy .

Answer #3

Going from a workout right into bed is not bad, but you need to allow your body time to cool down. This means getting your blood flowing faster then normal (just walking around works) so your body can clean out the lactic acid built up. This means you won’t be sore the next morning and you’ll get more out of your workout.

Answer #4

it is not necessarily unhealthy to workout before bed, but it can lead to unhealthy habits. Working out before bed is a great way to get ride of energy and tire you out before you hit the hay, but however, often after working out you may feel the need to “re-fuel” by eating a meal. This is where the unhealthy habits can start. When you eat substantial amount of food after you work out, naturally you would work off the food throughout the course of the day. However, doing so before bed, the food will sit in your stomach while you sleep, and can lead to fat gain. Thus, your workout just went completely to waste because now you need to work out twice as hard to burn off that food.

Answer #5

but i don’t do heavy weight ligting just pushups, crunches and isometric stuff. i support what Beneben ^ said doing heavy workout might lead to unhealthy behaviour of eating late night.

Answer #6

i know from experience haha.. it’s not fun

Answer #7

not really, but I bet if you exercise in the morning, you’ll find you’ll like it a lot. especially if you go running or do weights. It makes the whole day feel better because you’ve already done something active and productive before the day even starts. Plus it clears your head :)
