Why do I have a sudden fear of driving?

I used to love it. I only have my learners license, but whenever my mom makes me drive for practise, i break out in a huge sweat and i’m like shaking the whole ride…this has all happened only within the past two weeks..

Answer #1

It could be that certain roads you take make you nervous. If you haven’t driven in a while, it may be just uncomfortable for you.

Personally, after only returning to driving a few weeks ago, I still get nervous on narrow roads. I don’t trust my poor vision as much as I used to.

Your fear isn’t entirely irrational. Driving or riding in automobiles is the most dangerous activity we do on a daily basis. More amazing to me is the way so many drivers are so cavalier and dismissive of the dangers. With few exceptions you have to drive to survive in the US. There are a few places where you can get by without driving but it is really difficult everywhere else. This is a fear you will have to face. Do what you can to be safe: wear seatbelts; don’t get distracted by radio, phone, texting; don’t drive significantly faster or slower than surrounding traffic; be aware of other drivers and think of ways out if another motorist veers into your lane, cuts you off, runs a stop sign or red light, etc.

Answer #9

I think driving period is scary.. I hate driving.. Cause in an instant someone could get killed.. And there’s a lot of stupid drivers out there… I see so many texting while driving.. And usually there on the freeway!!!

Answer #10

I just got my learner’s permit about 3 months ago, and I was also nervous about driving. My dad takes me to roads in rural areas where there is not much traffic, and that helped alot. Now I am not the least bit nervous and I am starting to drive on more busy roadways, but I am extremely careful. Maybe you should start out the same way, you will be fine once the initial fear subsides :)

Answer #11

That’s not unsual. Seriously. I’ve been a licenced driver for over 15 years, and as soon as my Mum gets in the car I become a sweaty, nervous can’t-even-find-the-wiper-switch mess.

Just be calm, indicate when necessary and drive. You know how….so just drive.

Answer #12

it’s natural to get fears of driving with the society we are in. your fears could be that your are afraid of actual drivers who can’t seem to drive or you’re not comterable with operating a vehicle and many things like afriad of crashing or you’re not confident with yourself to handle something with so much responsibility.
