Stripping of the altar right before easter sunday

Why do they remove all the things from the altar either on palm sunday or maunday thursday or good friday?

Answer #1

Yes - the symbolism is to show that this is the bleakest time in the church year, when we remember what Jesus suffered for us on the cross. Then on Easter Sunday everything is colourful with flowers everywhere, as a symbol of new life and rejoicing!

Answer #2

I believe that is the acknowledgement of Jesus suffering and death, the reliegion of that view works through exactly what happens. palm sunday the people welcomed him into the city, good friday he dies thus the purple for suffering that covers everythibng and on Easter Sunday he comes back as in raised from the dead.

OK, I saw stripping in the title, and thought something has really changed since the last time I stepped foot in a church. But I see I am wrong. Damn, that might of gotten me to go back.
