Does straining out of your voice range damage your voice?

Seven months ago, my vocal teacher made me practice low notes so low that it hurt when I sang them. I think my voice is damaged because I did this for so long. Will my voice recover?

Answer #1

Did she teach you about useing your diophram first?

Answer #2

No, she didn’t teach me how to use my diaphragm first. She taught me that after a few more lessons. :(

Answer #3

You can certainly strain your voice by singing outside your range. Having a strong wide range is good for singers so voice teachers try to extend your range and power. If they work your voice too hard this can lead to strain or even damage. You should tell your voice teacher your concerns.

Answer #4

hmm, well she doesn’t sound too smart. Always use your diaphram. But I’m pretty sure if you can make the pitch, then its not out of your range.

Answer #5

Well, I hurt my throat whenever I reach for really low notes, so I stopped. I think my voice has been beat up too much over poor lessons.

Answer #6

It’s too late, because she’s not giving vocal lessons anymore, but thanks for your concern. Even when I use my diapraghm correctly, I can’t sing very much sometimes.

Answer #7

yes it does. if you yell too loud, you will blow ur voice box. yuh don’t wanna do that, do you?!

Answer #8

No, I don’t yell when I sing, but thanks.

Answer #9

I had the opposite problem. I was usually forced to sing above my comfortable range. Funny thing is that when I was in music school everyone told me that my speaking voice sounded a lot like Donald Southerland. Years later I saw an interview where Southerland attributed his gravely voice to being forced to sing tenor in choir when he was a natural bass. It took a long time but my voice did recover; I no longer have a gravely voice. It also took a long time for the tinnitus that I developed as a musician to go away but thank goodness it did.
