Should media give us all of the story ?

General Ricardo Sanchez said, as described in a Wall Street Journal op-ed piece last Thursday, “What is clear to me is that you [referring to the media] are perpetrating the corrosive partisan politics that is destroying our country and killing our service members who are at war.” He lashed out at Congress for rank partisanship, undermining the confidence of the troops - yet, the only part reported was he ‘ faulted the Bush administration for its handling of the war’ - Should the media report all of the story to the American people or ‘omit/edit’ as they see fit ?

Answer #1

Well, I think it depends on which media you pay attention to.

Fox/radio is much more conservative, where TV has a liberal bias. I have a Print Journalism degree and extensively studied bias in the media. The only way it will ever be stopped is if the horrible conglomorate media companies diffuse. Which isn’t going to happen. As long as there are partisan people owning and running the media, it will be biased. It’s not a partisan issue slanted toward one side or the other, as your question implies.

Thanks for your thoughtful/learned response, I appreciate it but my question was : Should: A) media report all the story or B) omit/edit as they see fit

I understand I don’t have the extensive education in that area you do, but to me, the question ( Should the media report all of the story to the American people or ‘omit/edit’ as they see fit ?) seems pretty straightforward.

General Sanchez:

“What is clear to me is that you (the media) are perpetuating the corrosive partisan politics that is destroying our country and killing our service members who are at war. My assessment is that your profession, to some extent, has strayed from these ethical standards and allowed external agendas to manipulate what the American public sees on TV, reads in newspapers and what they see on the Web. For some of you, just like some of our politicians, the truth is of little to no value if it does not fit your own preconceived notions, biases and agendas.”
