First…get a “general” feeling for the breed by looking it up on the internet…You won’t get exactly the same thing as anyone else…every dog is different. The key to getting what you want is making your choice when you see the litter…so don’t get hung up in male or female…

Don’t pick the pup that hides in the corner (even if you feel sorry for it)…too shy…don’t pick the pup that runs straight at you, and starts to immediately bite and play…too assertive…pick a pup who’s curious, and friendly…even if it hangs back for a bit, that’s ok, as long as it moves forward with a little coaching…You’re looking for the middle ground in puppy personality.

Every Shih Tzu I’ve ever met, has been a happy (and pretty darn courageous) little being…

The key to housebreaking is vigilance…so if you aren’t home, then crating is the answer…they won’t go potty in their crates, unless you get one that is too large…if you do get a large one, you can block the back half with plywood, and enlarge it as the pup grows…I’d say 2 to 3 weeks, if you don’t let housebreaking slide when you’re tired, or too busy.

Good luck and congrats on your new puppy!!

-How hard was it to train your puppy and housebreak it?

Not hard at all.

2-How long did it take you to house break it?

It was a long time ago but I dont think it took more than 3 weeks

3-Were you home all day? If not what did you do?

Mom was home all day

4-Did you let it sleep with you?

No, never. He loved the security of having a little gate across the laundry room area. That always made him settle down for the night.

5-Do they snuffle or snore?

He didn’t

6- Which gender did you buy and did you regret it?

Male, no regrets

7-How much did you pay for it?

Nothing, it was a puppy of a friends dog

8-How old was it when it died? If still alive.. how old

He was only 4. He died of a kidney failure, sadly. His mother, on the other hand, lived till she was almost 14.
