How do read a guitar tab?

for example: like the A string cud say –1—1—1—1—1—1, how wud i plaY THAT?

The number represents the fret you play that string on, one would be the first fret. So you would strum the A string in the first fret six times.

I meant the number represents the fret you put your finger in on that string… sorry I guess I didn’t make myself completely clear. So you would strum the A string with your finger on the A string in the first fret six times.
