Answer #2

Our bones grow by building more cartilage at the end that slowly becomes bone. These areas are called growth plates. While you are growing your growth plates can be damaged. When growth plates are damaged this can cause the bone to stop growing or to grow irregularly. When we are done growing our growth plates mature and become as strong as the rest of our bone.

It is possible to damage growth plates doing heavy lifting. You really don’t have to worry about calisthenics but people still actively growing should avoid weight training with extremely heavy weights. Lighter weights and more repetitions are appropriate for athletes who are still growing and they should hold off on heavy lifting until they are adults.
