How do I protect my Chihuahua from large predatory birds?

(We are moving to a farm at the end of the month and when we were there the other night dropping off some stuff, I noticed a large owl coming out of the barn. I know that dogs under 15 pounds can be picked up as prey to large predatory birds, like owls. I’m really stressing about my little Chihuahua as he is only 9 pounds. I’m not sure how to ensure he is safe after darkwhen he goes out to do his business and play)

Answer #1

Do you have an area of the yard where you can set up fully enclosed fencing (including a roof)? That way he can run around safely and nothing can get to him.

Answer #2

Thanks much. Thats a good idea! We certainly have the room as we have several acres. I’ll talk to my husband about it and see if I can bully him into making something. (He is not half as concerned as I, I’ve been having bad dreams about it!) Many Thanks!

Answer #3

Lol, you wouldn’t have this problem if you had my 22+ pound Chihuahua! >:D

Answer #4

LOL! My pug is 28 punds so I at least don’t have to worry about him! I purposely got a large Chihuahua so he would be a bit more robust than the average (mine actualy likes to run beside my bike (I ride slowly of course) and is rippling muscle. : )

Answer #5

Lol, I wanted an itty-bitty, cute little Chihuahua. -__- The people I bought it from said it would get no bigger than 3-5lbs. Pssh, yeah right. Haha.

Answer #6

Did they sam you and give you a cross? From what I understand Chihuahua’s can reach 18 pounds, but 22lb wow!

Answer #7

That was suppose to be “scam”, not “sam”!

Answer #8

My Chihuahua is over 22lbs….I don’t think she is a full blooded Chihuahua like they said, I think she is mixed with feist or something. She is HUGE!

I live in Missouri & have an Italian Greyhound who weighs 11 pounds. Last year I had a Hawk swoop down on her in our back yard - with it’s talons down, ready to grab her! I was standing inside the patio doors watching & had it not been for our Afghan Hound that took off at a full force run to chase the Hawk - I think it would have gotten my little Chloe.. So, your concern is justified. Those birds WILL go after small dogs if they’re hungry. I called around & found that there’s not a lot you can do to stop them..other than putting a roof of some sort over a small area as was previously suggested. We used rather large wire fencing to cover an area of yard for our little IG..so she would still get sunshine. Good Luck with your little one! :)

Angelee, I agree, I think you were lied to. I had the same thing happen with my Pug, I was told he was pur pug, but he’s way too big and active to be pur pug. It doen’t matter though, I still love him, he’s great and I wouldn’t change him if I could. I’m sure you feel the same about your sweetheart! : )

BBCherryGarcia, Thats a scary story! how horrifying! Thanks the Gods for you Afghan! I have heard of it happening and as we go hiking with our little guy we are always careful (We have to watch for snakes too!). moving to a country home with a resident owl in the barn just adds more danger than normal. I love him so much I couldn’t bear it if something happened to him. Thank you for the advice and I am so glad your little Chloe is ok
