It is normal for a beginning guitarist to find that they need to strengthen the muscles in their left hand and fingers in order to fret properly. It is also very common for people to begin with that hand held in an “incorrect” position, which can lead to some additional strain as well as to certain playing problems later. So it’s important to get some qualified guidance to make sure you learn the right habits from the beginning.

The reason I put “incorrect” in quotations marks is that which position is correct depends on what kind of music you intend to play (which also affects the size and shape of guitar, including its neck, that’s best for you to use). Try to learn from someone who is expert in your preferred musical tradition.

A lot of guitar players swear be an exerciser called Gripmaster. Theraputty is another exercise tool that can exercise and strengthen hands and fingers. Some also say that neither work as well as playing and recommend practicing chromatic scales to build hand strength, dexterity, and flexibility.
