My cats won't stop fighting!

I have two cats, both three years old, both fixed. One is a male and the other is female. My male cat, about two weeks ago, saw another cat outside the window that looked exactly like him. He started hissing at it, and when my other cat heard, she felt threatened. She went into the dining room to see what was going on, and all of a sudden my male cat attacked the other one! We got them to stop fighting and out the male in my room for the rest of the weekend. After that, we let him out for the day. He seemed fine, but that night, around 4:30 a.m., my two cats started fighting again. We then put the male back in my room for two more days, then let him out again. Again, he seemed fine, but at night they were at each other again. This has been going on since, and I don’t know how two get them to stop fighting. Please, if anybody has any ideas or advice, it would be greatly appreciated. I don’t want to get rid of one or both of my cats.

I finally got a suggestion on my MSN group. This girl rescues cats and dogs…This is her answer…

“A couple of our younger cats will go after one or our seniors from time to time. We have a squirt bottle or water gun and spray them with water when they start to go after her. That works for us.

Is the stray kitty still hanging around? That can really upset some cats and could be what is causing the problem.”

Good luck.

Well if they are fine in the day then let them be free to rome the house but at night take turns puting them in the bathroom or your room.

Answer #3

It’s a territorial problem I think…and I think, also, seeing the other cat outside is what has triggered his attacking your girl. I honestly don’t have a solution…but will post your question to the “cat people” on my MSN Group…one of the rescuers could have had an experience like this, and a solution.

I see know reason to get rid of either of your cats. Something has obviously effected the male cat, what it is I don’t know but at this point the best way to prevent fighting is to seperate them. This may be an inconvenience but this way you can keep both of your well-loved pets.

I think you should try separating them at night instead of day

Answer #6

This is actually a question. Have a female spayed 18 months old and a male 15 months old. The male keeps fighting with the female. I know I should have had him neutered when he was younger. Just had him neutered on Dec. 29/09. Thought hopefully it would help. Well it didn’t.. I have to separate them. I tried again today, and the male just smells her out and beats the tar out of her. CAN ANY ONE GIVE ME ADVISE .. I DON’T WANT TO GET RID OF THE MALE. HELP..HELP..HELP..

Thank you .. Linda
