My bad past keeps haunting me, how do I move on?

I used to lead a double life away from my wife and children. I got addicted to drugs and spent all our money for years. I have moved my family away so we can start a new life but I keep geeting reminders that flash into my mind. A song or a place will just triger the memories of the nights out and the hell that I used to put myself through and it is destoying my life. How am I going to be happy again?

For me, my burdens were lifted when I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savoir - hope this helps you: http://stress.about.com/od/lowstresslifestyle/ss/happy.htm?nl=1

You have done so well already - I really admire you for the steps you’ve taken to make this new life work. I have a friend who avoids listening to certain songs etc for the same reasons you’ve mentioned - he still likes the music but it takes him back to places in his life he doesn’t want to revisit.

The username you’ve chosen shows how you feel about yourself, I guess.

Like Amblessed, I have to say that Jesus really does ‘wipe the slate clean’. A friend of mine became a Christian and kept worrying about her past. One day she felt God was showing her an image of a deep pool, with the sign ‘No Fishing’ stuck in it. She felt it was his message to stop ‘fishing’ in the past that he’d already forgiven. She felt really released by that! Later on someone found her a picture of a kingfisher sitting on a ‘No Fishing’ sign and she kept it to remind herself not to ‘fish’ back into her past.
