well I cant really answer that becuase my highschool doesnt have a traditional footbll and cheer leader team and everyone accepts everyone for who they are-stoners, hippies, preps, nerds, emos, and goths

It didn’t come out of nowhere. Popularity has been around since the beginning of time. It’s human nature to compete with others.
