Where did kissing under the mistletoe come from?

Answer #1

Mistletoe has been associated with love, fertility and vitality going back to pre-Christian classical Greece and Rome. It was probably used as a decoration during the pagan precursor of Christmas Saturnalia and its association with the freer Pagan celebration may have added to its mystique. The toxic sap is also believed to have been used by Druids to dispatch human sacrifices. The origin of kissing under mistletoe probably comes from Scandinavia where in a Norse story the god Baldur was killed with a spear made of mistletoe and after Baldur was resurrected it was declared that from that point on mistletoe would bring love rather than death.
