Is keeping a secret telling a lie ?

That depends on if the secret you’re keeping influences the truth or influences someone else’s views or opinions. It’s not exactly telling a lie, because you aren’t saying anything, but it can still harm a relationship.

Lying is deliberately telling an untruth, and keeping a secret is keeping your mouth shut. So, there is a difference. Keeping a secret is only considered lying if someone asks you specifically about the secret and you say you don’t know when you really do.

No it isn’t. When someone tells you something in confidence because they value you and trust you, you have nothing to gain by repeating it. Keep it in confidence and don’t participate in gossip or anything else.

I agree with TwiddlePumpkin. The ONLY difference I feel between both is that - Lying is telling something that is untrue. It may be to gain something, or hide some truth. And regarding keeping a secret, you don’t utter anything. It depends on the type of secret, to determine whether it’s a lie or not.. Secrets are sometimes kept in order to avoid hurting someone, or something that our dear and loved ones has confided in us, believing us, to share their feelings, emotions etc. And some secrets are like gossips. The latter ones are, definitely to be avoided, because it mostly hurts someone, or in some cases, it seeds hatred in our heart
