Well we had a chow guard dog a german shepherd guard dog and mix between beagle and hound it doesn’t have to be pureblood it’s how you train it!

I agree with phrannie, that it takes SO much time, effort AND MONEY to properly train a true guard dog, that an alarm system and a self-defense course would be better. Remember, you have no idea whether your mom & sis will be ABLE (or willing) to put in the time it takes to train & control any dog, much less one who is prone to attack.

Statistics also show that most burglars come well-prepared for guard dogs (steak, tasers, pepper spray and even guns), so no, a guard dog is probably NOT your best option, or theirs. Your mom and sister can get a good security system installed free, as a promotion, and the monthly monitoring fee is usually less than $50. I have one and feel much safer than I would with our dog, who is a Husky and will only defend us from other dogs…NOT people, as far as I know!

Well, you must understand that a “total guard dog” is NEVER easily manageable…at least in terms of training…The true “gladiator type” dogs are…Rotties, German Shepherds, Dobermans, Black Russian Terriers, Pitbulls, Belgiun Malinois, Belgiun Teruviens…and I’m sure there are others.

These dogs are ALL very time intensive, in need of extensive socialization, and very much need to BE with their people.

It doesn’t sound to me like you need a dog so much as you need an electronic burgler alarm, and some decent locks…now that’s really manageable!!!
