How to bathe a stubborn dog?

I have a pomeranian chihuahua mix who is about six months old.He is small,as you can imagine. We bathe him like every week or so so one time we bathed him but after that he ran away, and when he came back it was like months but someone found him but they didn’t care for him they just returned him and we tried to bathe him but he started to whine and scratch and we tried giving him treats and soothing him and giving him his faveorite treats before bathing but he does not let us! He always slips away or scratches or growls and he hates it! Anyone have any tips for me?

He is frightened…and the only way to lessen that fear…is basically make him face it…Talk soft (but not baby talk…that reenforces the behavior)…talk confindently…be very gently…give him a treat between sections…(his leg…give treat…his back…give treat)…Don’t expect him to change over night…this will take a while …say 6 months…He may never run to the tup and offer to jump in…but he will calm down.

Whatever you do, do not lose patience with him…everything that goes with having a bath HAS to be positive.

PS…he doesn’t NOT need to be bathed every week. That could be why he does all that scratching…Keep him brushed and groomed…give him a fish oil tab in his dinner…his skin and coat will get very healthy just from that.

It is possible the dog is injured in some way, or his hair is matted to the point where it hurts… I’d first go to the vet to have him checked out. If there’s nothing wrong with him, consider a professional grooming service. At least for the first bath. There after, if it’s not that he’s in pain, uhm try different ways of doing it. For example. He may not like being dumped into a bucket/bath tub with water. He may be ok with a shower (if you’ve got those shower heads). Maybe he’d prefer a bucket with water and doesnt like a shower. Try sponging him down. There’s something upsetting him, if you can figure out what that is, you’d have better luck…

my dog is a chihuahua and she hates bathes. We bathe her 1 time every month in a sink because she hates the bath tub. we give her a treat and warm towl after. the poor little thing shivers so much. Use calming words with your dog dont yell at him tell him its ok in a high pitch voice. my dog loves that. hope I helped
