How safe are rottweilers?

I want to get a rottweiler but my mom is worried about how safe one is. Can someone please tell me how aggressive a Rottweiler is?

Answer #1

Rotties are not aggressive per se. However, they are a dominant breed, and that means it takes firm…consistant…and FAIR leadership from the owner. If the owner cannot be a good leader for this breed, the dog will take over the job of “leader”, and then there can trouble brewing. They are not a dog for a first time owner.

You want to get a dog from a good breeder…one where you can see both parents…see what their personalities are like (a Rottie will show reserve around strangers, yet able to ‘warm up” …but never viciousness).

The are a large, VERY strong dog…and need exercise everyday. You’ll want to start socializing a pup as soon as he’s had his shots (that means getting him around lots of of people and other animals), so he will grow up accepting and not so territorial. They are naturally protective, so you don’t have work on that.

The only reason Rotties have gained a rep for viciousness, is because they got popular and over bred (when I was in my 30’s there were darn few Rot’s around…and the ones I knew were happy go lucky types)…I can’t emphasize enough…PICK A GOOD BREEDER.

How aggessive a dog is depends on how they’re treated, it doesn’t depend on the breed. Although characteristics and instincts vary, a dog definitely won’t be aggressive unless it is not trained properly or abused. A lot of people think that rottweilers are aggressive because, sadly, a lot of them are trained to be aggressive, when people take advantage of their large size to turn them into attack dogs. Because they are big dogs, it is very important to train rotties when they are young, teach them to sit, stay, walk on a leash, and obey you. Training classes are a very good idea. Rotties are instinctively protective of their territory, but won’t attack if they are trained properly. I have a rottweiler and an akita-rottweiler mix and both are very gentle, friendly, and obedient dogs. Good luck!! :)

Answer #6

I agree with Phrannie, They need a very in control owner, what I mean by that is not one who beats IT. one who is going to spend the time needed with it to train the dog. Phrannie hit the nail on the head. YOU MUST find the right breed with a line that has a very good temperment.

RIP Harley Ann– She was a great dog. I think she would have eaten cats if I allowed her. LOL

Answer #7

omg, twilightgirl, you’re saying that if you have a baby the dog will try to kill it? and you’ve never had a rottweiler yourself? how can you say something like that, dont talk about things you dont know about.

Answer #8

any dog is only as aggressive as the owners train it

Answer #9

Okay this dog will need a lot of attention and if a baby comes into the house after you got the dog the dog will try and kill the baby because they are one of the most attention needing dogs. So don’t have a kids after you guys get the dog do that before because then the dog will know from the beginning that the kids get more attention!.

But they are great dogs I have never had one myself but I know one and she is so big and pretty and soo nice.

Answer #10

If you repeatedly poke and provoke them, then they will be very kind and friendly. they will even entertain you…or me…that is.

Answer #11

I think a dogs behaviour all depends on the way you bring it up. If you give it lots of love and respect then it will give it back to you. Dogs are usually aggresive because their owners dont treat them well and maybe encourage them to be aggressive towards strangers. I had a rottweiler years back and she was absolutely beautiful, she was a good guard dog because she barked when people would arrive but she never bit or got aggresive and she was very affectionate and loving. So treat them well and you will have a well adjusted, loyal, affectionate dog who will be like one of the family.
