How do pre paied cell phones work? :)

My parents keep on taking my phone. And I have people I work for contact me on it. So I’m in need of a phone. But something I can do myself. Kind of like my first car, lol. Cause I’ve never paied for my own bill before. How do pre paied phones work and where can I get one? I want something without a contract, something I can activate easy and just put minutes on.

nope. I live in north carolina. lol. I’ve heard you can get the minutes from a gas station or something but I need to find out where I can actually get the phone itsself.
