How does the media influence you?

Today, in school we were debating about what kind of influence the media has on teenagers eg. continuos pics of beautiful, airbrushed celebs etc And it got me thinking…is it just me or does anyone else wonder what people’s obsessions with celebs such as Kate Moss are? Is she really all that great? I mean she went out with Pete Doherty, has been on/off drugs whilst she has kids, her collection for Topshop was ridiculously overpriced, she has zero personality, limited intelligence and most of her pictures are airbrushed anayway.

I don’t understand why the media makes her out to be such a great role model- serioulsy, are there no ‘normal’ girls who are beautiful not only outside, but inside that they can use to fill every available free space in magazines? Every time I look at pics of her I just feel bad about myself. Please tell me what you think- I’d love to hear from other teenagers too!

ill be honost, im not that skinny of a person, and sometimes, I wished I could nice and skinny. BUT I dont really pay attention to it, to be honost. I mean I have better things to do in my life besides following what the media does. when I was younger (like 8 or so) I did, I watched it and all but now, I have better things to do then to worry bout them. and worry about what they are shoving out to other people to make them feel bad about the way they look or whatever.

Searched airbrushed/ non-edited photos on youtube. You wouldn’t believe the difference. I’m 13, and I’m trying to not pay attention to all the bullsh*t that the media tries to feed you. But, you know what, I think everyone should admit this: it’s hard to ignore it.

I agree with what you said about Kate Moss xgabriellax. I don’t see anyhting that she does that really is so great- just poses and looks pretty. I’m 15 too and after loooking at magazines full of perfect celebs I can’t help but compare myself to them, and after realising I’m nothing like them, feeling depressed. The media sucks- how exactly does it expect people to feel after seeing millions and millions of pictures of beautiful people? It must realsie how low it makes normal people feel?

Answer #4

There is no question plays to their favorites and presents them always in a good light - don’t like, their picture and comments/articles will be as damaging as possible - my opinion, media these days has let us down - rather then reporting or undoctored pictures so the people can make up their own mind or form opinion, they slant, most of the time very biased, pushing their own agenda, in my humble opinion.

The media influences everyone whether it be concsiously or unconcsiously. Therfore the media does affect me. Im sure we’re all like you. We look in the mirror pick out our flaws and get down sometimes because we dont measure up. But in reality these people aren’t real. The images in those magazines are digitally manipulated and basically fake.

With Kate Moss I do agree. She has taken drugs and dated “bad boys”. I know people all make mistakes but at the same time you need a stable person to look up to. Would you like youre children striving to be like her? I wouldn’t.
