How to train a dog not to jump on you?

I have a lab/chow mix and I am having a problem with her junping on me. I know she is showing love and excitement but she is getting bigger and stronger and her nails are killing me… I have tried ignoring her when she does it, giving her the ‘down’ command, telling her ‘no’ to name a few. any suggestions?

Keep you knees to yourself…there is always a chance of hurting the dog (not just pain, but actual damage)…Physical punishment within a pack dogs, would be the absolute LAST resort for the alpha…Dogs understand “doggie language”…a knee in the chest is like talking “chinese” to your best friend…They’d still like you, but they wouldn’t understand a thing you said.

I agree with phrannie. When she is jumping up on you, just look away and ignore her, fold your arms. When she backs off praise her right away. Doing this constantly - whenever she jumps, will give your doggy the message that she will only get attention when she is on the ground and not on you!

Answer #3

IGNORE…IGNORE…IGNORE…Walk “through” her jump…do not make ANY noise…do not say NO, do not say DOWN…DO NOT MAKE ANY EYE CONTACT…act as though she’s invisible. It’s not so much showing affection…it’s showing disrespect. She would not do this to another dominant dog…

She’ll be confused at first…so the SECOND she plants ALL FOUR ON THE FLOOR, you praise her like she’s the best thing since sliced bread. Chows can be a little stubborn…and Labs can be exhuberant…but they are both smart…she’ll figure it out by the third or fouth time she trys to greet you with a jump.

Make sure your friends get the picture, also…
