How do you know if your turtle is a girl or boy

I would guess the easiest way would be to put a couple turtles in the tank together and see which one ends up on top/bottom.

If the Plastron or Belly Shell is incurved, it’s a male. If it’s flat or outcurved, it’s a female. Male tails are long and slender. Female tails are short and wide. The shell is usually the best way to tell the difference.

*When the turtle is just born, it will be difficult to tell what gender it is.

We need to know what type of turtle it is. All males have longer, thicker tails than the female. With some species of aquatic turtles - sliders, painteds, cooters, some map species - the male has long front nails, too. Male aquatic turtles WILL NOT have a concave bottom shell (plastron). Male box turtles and tortoises do have concave plastrons, as do many semi-aquatic turtles such as wood and mud turtles.

As for breeding your turtles, you have a lot of research to do. If you don’t even know what kind of turtle you have, you shouldn’t try to breed them. Turtles lay eggs, and you have to incubate them under certain conditions for at least two months (some species incubate for six months or more). If you don’t have the right conditions for a turtle to lay eggs, it could become egg bound and die if you don’t have a good reptile vet to do surgery.
