How do I type negative exponents into calculator?

I have a TI - 83 Plus calculator or w/e… anyways, is there a way to type in negative exponents…? Is it the same way you do positive exponents (^) but put a negative in front of the number (^-2) ? Because I tried that to see if I’d get the same answer as a problem that my teacher explained to us, but I didn’t get the right answer. (Is that how you do it, though!? Or is there another way?) If you know how, pleeaase tell me !!!

Answer #1

(-2)^-2 or (2)^-2

Answer #2
