How come family members treat those with disabilities differently?

How come family members treat those with disabilities differently? What’s so different when being treated either cruel, or other ways? compared to sighted people? I have a visual impairment and my family just treated me like I was nobody. What causes that? I’m just curious about this.

Answer #1

I’m not sure why this happens but it does. I have a member of my family that I don’t see often but she’s very ill and her children treat her like crap. If it wasn’t for a few family members she would have to be put it a nursing home. I don’t know if it’s the extra work involved with her that makes them do that or not but it’s not fun to watch!

Answer #2

I’ve got a ton of disabilites my 2 big ones are Im Autistic and I have CP. I think fear of the unknown, false perception of their failure as a person (I mustve done something to deserve this) , oh well leslie is XXX time for a pity party and she obviously (based on false assumptions) cant do anything herself… these are just ideas but I think

familial feelings of inadequacy/failure

different to them may = “broken” = “helpless”

historically people w/ disabilities in this country have been treated as 2nd class citizens
