How can I tell my ex I still like him without scaring him?

If you didn’t read my other question, me and my ex broke up about a year ago, we still don’t talk to each other because it was really bad when we broke up, screaming, crying, etc. But I love him and want him back in my life, I just don’t know how to say it. I was going to tell him I like him so I wouldn’t scare him with the love part, but that would probably scare him also. Sometimes he acts like he likes me too, He’ll always look at me if were in the same place, and when I look at him he’ll usually look into my eyes and then look down or away quick. and he probably stares at me when I don’t realize it because two times I was with my friend and he whispered “he’s staring at you.” And he always laughs at whatever I have to say, and one time I said something and he just smiled and couldn’t stop smiling, Which is a lot of progress since when we first broke up, but he dosent actually communicate with me. like today me and my friend went up to say hi to him and he pressed up against a wall and wouldn’t look at me and said “hi” really quietly to are friend. and then as he was leaving he was looking over his shoulder at me. but anyways, I don’t know if I should talk to him because he’s giving me mixed signals, and sometimes it seems like he’s to nervous to talk to me yet. what do you think??? School’s ending really soon and ide be really sad if I had to spend another summer without him :( please help!
