Was the US just in bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

I have a homwork assignment diue tomorow.It counts as a test grade.I was absent 2 of the days we were taught it,and I really need some help.Heres the assignment:

It is August of 1946.A full year has passed since WW2 ended with the dropping of atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.The American Public has become increasingly aware of the impact of the bombs through pictures and eye witness testimony.

You are an American Citizen that wished to express your opinon on the matter through a letter to the editor in the local newspaper.it is your responsibility to explain whether or not the United States was just in its final desicion.You must provide Concise evidence from your text,or case studies,in an attempt to persuade the reading audience that your viewpoint is stongest.You should discuss two other options that the US had,and explain why those should not have been chosen.These options are not limited to those in your case studies

One of the deciding factors was the horrendous loss of American lives that was expected. I think another was the history that the Japanese did not surrender, they generally fought until they were wiped out. If the US had done a normal invasion, I believe that much of the Japanese population would have died defending their nation. So, although the toll that the A-bombs took was tremendous, it was localized and may have caused fewer Japanese deaths than invasion. (This is just the feel that I have gotten from watching History Channel.)
