Friend is complaining about sleeping problems.

My younger friend (aged 16) has been having difficulty sleeping lately.

He’s complaining of waking up during the night with cold sweats/panic attacks.

He has a lot on his plate now; his father recently attempted suicide, he and his girlfriend are having difficulties, he’s somewhat freaking out over school (he wants to get into a good college so he’s somewhat an over-achiever).

Given that I know so much about his life right now, I told him that maybe he was just really upset and stressed. He’s also the kind of person to not talk about his problems until recently when he started talking to me more.

While I don’t think it’s anything serious, he told me that he’s kind of turned off from sleeping because of this, and if it is stress related, then NOT sleeping / being stressed out about not sleeping definitely isn’t helping.

Anyone think they could help me out here? Thanks, and I appreciate it.

Answer #2

I think you were right. The best thing is to be there for him and listen to him. Do things with him away from his home. Perhaps being there is stressing him out. Let him stay over on the weekend sometimes, go walking, and coax him into some fun. There’s not really anything you can do to help him other than being there for him. You might suggest he take a melatonin when he goes to sleep. It’s a natural sleep aid. You can find it anywhere with a pharmacy aisle.

Answer #3

if it does not help you being his friend suggest that he see a doctor..from experience, lack of sleep makes you crankier and frustrated…
