Finding the right horse

As I am a complete novice could you give me advice as to exactly the criteria I should be looking for? I do not intend to learn to compete! I want a gentle horse with a calm temperament.

Thank you.

If you are a novice rider make sure that you get a horse that has done more things and is more experienced than you are, that way he can teach you rather than you having to teach him. Go for a gelding because they are the most dependable and try ages 10-12, so they are fully trained but still in their prime. Height doesnt matter very much as long as you and the horse are both comfortable.

It does not matter what breed (as every horse within each breed has a different personality…). Quarter horses are generally calm…as are Tennessee Walkers…You simply need to be on the look out for a horse that is bomb proof, young enough to have for a long time (many live well passed 30)…One that has been used for trails, hunting, etc. Things that add up to a lot of experience in their lives.

Get somebody who knows horses to help find one…
