How do we find new band members?

My friend and I want to start a band. I play guitar and she sings (she takes lessons and all that) I also sing a bit. But we need a drummer, base, keyboard ect. I would have friends join, but not a lot of our friends play an instrument, or would stay committed. I thought of putting an article for holding auditions in our local newspaper (where I live everyone knows everyone, we’re a small town.) There’s no way we could pay the band members because we don’t have any income9i’m only 14) , and we want people within our age group. (12-16ish) so it’d just be something to do for fun. But it would be nice to eventually improve and actually be hired for gigs (or whatever you call them) haha. Do you have any suggestions on how to get started up with this band? We have been trying to start one for a while now. My friend and i also play and sing at youth group.

Answer #1

I’d suggest putting up flyers and holding auditions.. But make sure that whoever you audition knows that they won’t be getting paid

Answer #2

thanks:) do you think we could pass out flyers at school? or would the school get angry?

Answer #3

The youth group might be a place to start. Does your school have a music class? I’d say just ask around and see if anyone is interested in hanging out to play music together instead of saying you want to start a band. The “start a band” thing could imtimidate someone. Lots of bands have been formed by people who where just experimenting with what they knew about music and enjoyed playing together. It takes alittle time not only to get to know people but to figure out their “musical self’. My wife and I play music with people (we both are acoustic guitar pickers and singers) that we normally would have nothing in common with, but a musical type get-to-gether, it’s amazing how friends are made. My advice is to start with finding people who just wanna play music because they like to, then go from there.

I don’t think the school would mind, but it all really depends o how strict the rules are. (:

Answer #5

Just to add to the already good ideas here - sometimes local music stores have bulletin boards that tend to get checked frequently.

Answer #6

this is awesome advice:) A band does sounds intimidating…i mean it’s a big commitment. So I just ask around? what do i say?

Answer #12

Well just find musicians and ask if they would be interested in hanging out sometime and knock a few tunes around. Don’t imtimidate them. You know, everyone has insecurities about their own talent so I wouldn’t bring up musical styles, how good someone is or anything like that because they may shy away. Just invite them and let the thing evolve as people get comfortable. Creativity is the foundation then comes calaberation. It takes time
