Why do my eyes change shade depending on my emotion?

When I’m upset or mad my eyes are a really dark (almost black) shade of brown. When I’m sad my eyes are dull and my irises are dark grey. When I’m in a good mood my eyes are sparkly and really light, almost hazel.

Eyes may appear to change color due to different light reflections, pupil size, and maybe even blood flow. When you’re angry your body is likely going through a “fight or flight” response which increases blood flow and causes your pupils to dilate. That could very well be causing the appearance of your eyes changing colors. Eye color is genetically determined before birth and do not change color. Babies sometimes have a change in eye color, but that is only due to the pigmentation not showing up immediately.
