I can truly understand your fear…even tho I’ve had many pets in my 58 years, I still feel that “fear of losing my buddy”, when they are getting older. I’m sorry, but as amblessed said, we all die. The hardest part about loving pets so much, is we always out live them. 17 is very old for a dog, so your family has taken GREAT care of him…that’s wonderful!! My Vet has a dog who is 21, so it’s not impossible that he may have some good time left…Don’t let the fear of the future wreck your good time today…it’s out of human control…Love your pupper for as long as you can, and appreciate every moment. Living by this code will get you thru all the “eventualities” that cross you path..

So go love up that little guy for all of us…and feel good that you’ve given him such a great home for all his life.

WOW your dog lived for a long time. But my parents old dog lived til 18 years old and that’s twice as long of a time estimated for large dogs lifespan. You are very lucky to have spent that much time with your dog :) Just take good care of him and give him a lot of attention and loving and he will hold on as long as he can because of that!!!

Thank you very much Phrannie that was VERY uplifting to me! you made me cry :’’’( It helped tho I needed that! Thanx! :)

Answer #4

wow, your dog is already above the average age. It could be a year at most. Make your time last, and maybe get a new puppy in honor.

Hug him and kiss him and love him, and let him know he’s loved! Lucky boy to be 17 and have someone care about him so much.

The oldest dog I’ve seen was at my vet, he was 20 and the size of a yellow lab. I was shocked, and the dog wasn’t doing too hot, but he was alive.

Your dog might have a few years left, but the important thing is to let him know you love him, don’t dwell on the future and don’t allow him to suffer =)

I understand completely…we just put my dog down a few weeks ago and it was the most heartbreaking experience of my life. we had him since he was born and he was months away from being 15. he was like a brother and best friend to me and I miss him more than I could ever say. all I can say is if it is his time…let him go…my dog was starting to suffer and I could not bare to keep him going through that pain just to hold onto him. he was the best friend I will never have again but I will never forget him. and I know this is exactly the way you feel about your dog, he/she looks adorable and I wish the best for you and your dog. -Jess

Sounds like he’s had a great, long life - we all man/animal, must face we don’t live forever - enjoy and be thankful for the time you have together…Take care !!
