What's the difference between scalloped potatoes, au gratin potatoes, and cheese potatoes?

Scalloped potatoes are sliced and baked in a casserole and may or may not contain cheese; Au gratin potatoes are first cooked, then the cheese is sprinkled over top and then set under a broiler until the cheese is melted and starting to brown; Cheese potatoes is very general, but often consists of baked, boiled, or fried potatoes covered or mixed with cheese
