What's more damaging to your hair - chemically straightening hair (when needed), or straightening it daily (with heat protectant and flat-iron)?

I’m having a debate with myself whether or not to get it chemically straightened, because I have an immense amount of split ends and damage from straightening it and blow-drying it all the time, lol.

So I just wanna know what people think.. :)

They are both bad for you, but I think its better to use the flat-iron. Chemicals are not only bad for your hair its being put on your head so go figure.

Answer #2

Get a trim, and don’t do the chemical straightening. That way you at least have the option to have your hair natural on a day you don’t feel like fixing it. You can at least protect your hair with heat protectants if you flat iron it, there isn’t anything like that for chemically straightening it.

Chemically straightening your hair will be a big mistake, and I can almost promise you that you will regret it. If you already have a huge amount of damage as it is from flat ironing your hair and using the blow-dryer, chemically straightening your hair will bring your hair to the point of no return. I used to flat iron my hair TWICE a day at full heat, all summer long. When winter rolled around, my hair looked absolutely terrible. It was difficult, but I decided to cut it to above my shoulders and start over. I went to the hairdresser and they told me that my flat iron needed to be at 200 degrees, max, and I should only do touch ups daily with the flat iron. They also said not to straighten my hair everyday. So, I started using heat serums and protective spray every single time I used a heat appliance on my hair, and I only straightened it every three days. You shouldn’t wash your hair everyday if you straighten it. My advice to you would be to get a hair cut to remove your damage and split ends, and talk to a hairdresser about what the best options are for your hair. Good luck, hope I helped!

There’s also the Keratin Hair treatment that is not supposed to be damaging, that keeps hair straight. It’s expensive, but at least you’re not hurting your hair.

Answer #5

both are harmful…..doing it chemically is even more harmful though…:D

Answer #6

straighten it every day. My personal choice natural is better. If not natural Keratin is the best, I’ve seen tons of ppl with it no bad results. Just take good care and ask about the keratin theree is one that can burn your nose and it contains a terrible chemical used in dead ppl really damaging.
